(road)TRIP

SOUNDTRACK: The Dandy Warhols, Bohemian like you

YOUTUBE VIDEO

Hello everybody,
I'm not dead.. I was just busy in the past few months. I wish I could say that I've just travel a lot and had fun, and I actually did but not just that.

I said goodbye to Philly (with an amazing open art event with huge structure to remind the 5 senses) and to NYC going to Coney Island.

I have to graduate despite everything, I left my beloved US (in tears I must say), I got home... twice (once in Italy and once in Sardinia), I saw my old friends, my family, my sea. I worked in crazy restaurant but I will write about this in my first language to really express the craziness of the the people working there.

But today it's just for saying that I'm back! and that I said goodbye to my American home in the best way: road trip! Yup.. another one. I had to see the Outer Banks before leaving since I didn't go to California. So me and another bunch of Italians just drove for hours and have the best long weekend ever!
For now just the last pictures of my amazing year in the US... thank you guys, it's been great to meet you.

livin' the (ex)ghetto

SOUNDTRACK: RATATAT, Bare Feast

Youtube

Hello everyone,
now that the snow is finally melted and just a memory I can try rebuild my sense of humor. So besides the tragedy of my hairy legs now visible for all...IT'S SPRINGTIME!
As many of you guys already know for sure, in US spring and summer = block parties and food festivals. Definitely the most interesting for the environment and the atmosphere around is the south street festival which seems to say to all " take a break an enjoy".

I have to say that is kind of crazy see all those colors all together and I'm so glad I got my camera with me.

So let me explain why south street is so special to me. At least a couple of reasons: Carmela used to live there last summer so to me is just a wonderful memory of me and her eating the guac of Whole Food for the entire month of August, one of my favorite place where to exorcise EVERYTHING is on south street and of course it is about music (Repo Records, find them on fb), my love Josh lives round the corner (the first time that I went there there was 1 meter of snow on the ground, seems like a forever ago), South street is the only place where to eat the original Philly cheesesteak, and of course... the murals.
South street used to be the ghetto and so a terrible place where to live, now the city and the neighborhood just changed and turned in something different and I'm speaking as a person with another culture and from another country but also as an observer of the city (I will never forget this place). Why? The same old story: immigrants. South street was the home of the international Philly and south Philly now have this heritage to defend. Here we can find the Italian market (which now should change its name in the Mexican market) but not just that. It's a mixture of Italian, Mexican, African American, Colombian and so on people. It's the little Queens of Philly so if you have to live in Philly (I had lived in 4/5 different parts of the city) listen to me: go to south. It's cheap, nice, multicultural, safe (or at least not more dangerous considering other parts of the city). And South street it's like the main entrance to this strange and colorful world where you might not hear English for blocks, far from Rittenhouse Square for sure with pros and cons. But every corner is a surprise and you will never get born. And what is life without adventure and new discoveries?

Follow my path... and discover the areas that are fancy... but in a very peculiar way.

Spring break

SOUNDTRACK: Chemical Brothers, The Salmon Dance

Direi dulcis in fundo il negozio-senza-nome in old city.

Nello specifico vi servirà: tonno rosso, avocado, imitation crabmeat (buona fortuna a trovarla in Europa dove NON ESISTE), tempura di gamberi. No scherzo proverò a trovare qualcosa lo prometto.

Soundtrack: Antonio Vivaldi, Inverno

Io in genere ODIO L'INVERNO.

Martin Luther King Day

Welcome back to everyone!
I have come back to my American home after a long trip and my nostalgia deserves a song:

Ok now we can change the subject!
This time we will discuss about this very special day for one very special community here as we always do: moving, trying to understand why this day so important and making an effort to finding something unique like...going to New York to see the exhibition of Chris Ofili.

This is quite fair for Martin Luther King day since the Afro-American culture struggles a lot to have justice and not just in this place of the world. I imagine that someone have heard about the facts that happened in several parts of US during the past year and trust me when I say that I've never seen something like that before: people spontaneously went to the streets of every city asking for justice against racism. This could sound maybe old fashioned for some of you, but this is reality, we are not all equal and we have not all the same rights. So if you're trying to hide yourself behind a social establishment justifying that, you can't do that today. I have to face an ugly truth because if you don't do something, you're just part of the problem. So the best thing that I can do is trying to understand a social problem like this as a foreign here and speak, or better, write.
This is my voice screaming: THIS IS NOT FAIR!

That's why we chose to be in NY, at that exhibition, in that weekend.
Being in NY is always amazing and even this time we were plenty of things to do even if we had just 2 days. We decided to stay in a hostel (as I always said, my favorite way of traveling besides couchsurfing) in Brooklyn.

I just think that Brooklyn would be that place were I 'd like to live one day (in NY). The place was wonderful and surprise surprise the girl at the reception worked in Milan...at Ostello Bello, the same place that you can all see in my post about Milan. What a coincidence! Or maybe was just...meant to be...
The first day the sky was clear and NY seemed just waiting for us. Just the time to get to the hostel and gooo to the theater. The reason was Opera of course...since I wanted to see how Americans interpreted "La Traviata" (Wiki) by Verdi. My darling opera... I was full of curiosity about..but I had to say... Violetta was terrible! I was more than curious after the huge controversy about the modern Traviata at La Scala last year but the problem was not the innovation at all. I saw here in Philly the Barber of

Seville... twice. If I chose to see it twice must be a reason right? Even in that case there was a lot of innovation on the stage..but the characters were soooo good! Was a more than earned standing ovation! And I couldn't agree more! At least I had the opportunity to see the Met theater. It was huge! and with his own style, very different for sure in comparison with ours but not in a negative way. As always the atmosphere of the Opera was magic, like some sort of spell was cast. The three hours of show were not easy to manage, especially without dinner! That's why we chose to get back in Brooklyn and find something to eat. Lucky us, there was a little...I don't even know what definition I should use for that place... half way between Mexican and old-weird-not-very-clean place. They had a window where the food was exposed: tons of fried tacos and several kinds of meat. Inside, the desert. After we came in a bunch of people stopped by to take something away and here my travel company said: "well well it's popular after all!" making me laugh. She took rise and beans while I opted for fried pork. Excellent choice. It was very late but the guys did't seem bothered by us although when we ask a glass of water they literally gave us just one glass..hilarious how that scenario was absurd! But the best part was the end: we asked for the check expecting to spend at least 10 dollars or around, we were always in NY and the big apple it's not cheap like my beloved Philly, not even that honky-tonk place! But with huge surprise he smiled and said: "7 dollars.." and my mate replied: "Is it separate?", he replied " Would you prefer ?!" and then we realized that 7 dollars was the total (with taxes)...cheapest meal in NY ever and probably one of the more funny.

Once we got at the hostel we took a tea and went to sleep (at 3 am).
Rise and shine! Brand new day welcomed us with a storm! It never stopped raining for the entire day. We took the subway to be in neighborhood of Chelsea ( maybe I could live also here...) in order to reach the amazing New Museum of Art (Wiki and Official website).

The first time that I went here was summer and the exhibition was called "Here and elsewere" taking the name from a 1976 Godard movie (very instructive and the I loved the artist who described Lebanon and its history).
This time the star is Chris Ofili with his Night and Day (Wiki and the Exhibition).

I don't want to say anything because I think that his art can speak for him and for me too.
I will just described the history of one the paintings because it's very peculiar: the first time that Ofili had a personal exhibition in NY was at Brooklyn Museum. He showed his Virgin Mary and the catholic community didn't take well that kind of art (she is surrounded by a collage of vaginas ). The mayor at the time was Giuliani and he wanted Ofili exhibition be evicted from the city. But the museum took the part of the artist and refused to not show the painting. That's more: they sued the municipality of New York using the first amendment to save the museum and the freedom of expression.. and they won.
Virgin Mary

It's even thanks to artist like Ofili that we can take off the veil of ignorance and see how much work we still have to do for not judging people for their differences and he explained this in every representation.

No woman no cry:
the history of a
mother that wants
 justice for her
son death

I could not put all the picture that I did...but on the website of the museum there are all the podcast about the whole collection and I suggest to take a look, it is not interesting but also new, fresh and inspiring.

We spent the rest of the evening eating and chatting in Chelsea and I will show you why I love this neighborhood...It's full of little intimate places where take a drink or eat a cheesecake or even small galleries all around few blocks!
What can I say more?
